lot of us RELY on Microsoft Office for what we do with our Macs, and prefer IE to half-baked crap like Netscape, Opera and Omni. I am a writer. Without Microsoft Word for Mac, I don't buy a Mac. ClarisWorks' word processor is a joke (no master documents, no comments ability, no inline spell and grammar check).

As for whether the MS Office file formats have been adopted by more than one company, hm .... Stop here a second. Does that software input only or can it output files so that MS Office can read them? I think it only goes one way. If MS Office cannot read their output, then the format is not widespread;

I got a Toshiba PIII 850MHz laptop used for my son in college. It's got DVD/CD-RW, wireless, firewire, USB, etc. So far he can do anything he wants on it including music recording, vidoe editing, etc. Get a legit copy of MS office as a part of deal.
